Harley wet sumping

When the engine is running there is oil pressure that opens the check valve and allows the oil to flow through the engine. If the check valve wasn't there, all the oil in the oil tank would flow into the lower end of the engine. Then when you start the engine it blows it out the breather. This is called Sumping. Wet sumping is when oil fills the crankcase of a dry sump system. The symptoms of this is typically excessive smoking and oil coming out the engine breather tube. Yes i have heard of the wet sumping problem with the old plunger type pumps, in fact all return oiler Indians will do this when the oil pump is a little worn. The problem is partly the sump valve as you've mentioned but most of the problem comes from the pump return plunger (or return gears in the case of a later Chief).
